Steve McCurry. Icons en Madrid
Steve McCurry es uno de los principales referentes internacionales en el mundo de la fotografía de los últimos 30 años, con decenas de portadas de revistas y libros, más de una docena de libros e innumerables exposiciones en todo el mundo.
Nacido en los suburbios de Filadelfia, Pensilvania, McCurry estudió cine en la Pennsylvania State University, antes de trabajar para un periódico local. Después de varios años trabajando como freelance, McCurry realizó el primero de sus muchos viajes a la India. Viajando con poco más que una bolsa de ropa y otra con rollos de película, cruzó el subcontinente explorando el país con su cámara.
Después de varios meses de viaje, cruzó la frontera hacia Pakistán. Allí, conoció a un grupo de refugiados de Afganistán que le ayudaron a cruzar la frontera de su país junto a ellos, justo cuando la invasión rusa estaba cerrando el país a todos los periodistas occidentales. McCurry, vestido con atuendo afgano, barba y la piel desgastada por el clima después de semanas conviviendo con los muyahidines, ofreció al mundo las primeras imágenes del conflicto en Afganistán, poniendo un rostro humano al tema de actualidad del momento.
Desde entonces, McCurry ha creado imágenes asombrosas en innumerables países de los siete continentes. Su trabajo abarca conflictos, culturas en extinción, tradiciones antiguas y cultura contemporánea, pero siempre conservando el elemento humano que hizo de su célebre fotografía de la niña afgana una imagen tan poderosa.
McCurry ha sido reconocido con algunos de los premios más prestigiosos de la industria, incluida la Medalla de Oro Robert Capa o el National Press Photographers Award, y ha ganado cuatro veces el primer premio del concurso World Press Photo. El Ministro de Cultura de Francia también nombró a McCurry Caballero de la Orden de las Artes y las Letras y, más recientemente, la Royal Photographic Society de Londres le otorgó la Centenary Medal for Lifetime Achievement.
